Inclusion policy
Introduction
Scouting gives young people a brilliant start in life. We help them develop the skills, confidence, and teamwork they might otherwise miss. At 2nd South Petherton, we offer these opportunities to everyone, regardless of gender, race, ability, religion, or background.
We particularly encourage parents who feel Scouting might not be for their child to speak with us. We want to ensure every family feels welcome and able to benefit from our programme.
This summary is just part of a comprehensive national inclusion and diversity framework that the Scout Association provides for us to follow. You can read these policies in full at Scouts: Inclusion.
Financial support
We keep membership fees as low as possible to ensure cost never prevents a young person from joining. Scouting shouldn't require expensive new gear. We often have second-hand uniforms available. If you need items like hiking boots or waterproofs, please ask your Section Leader; we can often coordinate with other families to find spares or "passed-down" kit. We can offer financial support to cover part or all of the costs for events, including camps. If you have a genuine need, please contact your Section Leader, the Group Lead Volunteer, or the Group Treasurer. We treat all applications in the strictest confidence. While we may ask for supporting evidence, we handle every request with sensitivity.
Additional needs
We want every child to participate as fully as possible. If your child has specific learning, behavioural, or physical needs, please talk to us about how we can support them.
We recognise that our Scout Hut (external doors, toilet and kitchen facilities) are not currently fully accessible to wheelchair users. This may limit participation for some young people with mobility needs.
The Group is committed to improving accessibility over time and will continue to explore practical, affordable ways to make the building more inclusive. In the meantime, leaders will work with families to identify what adaptations, or support may be possible within the current limitations of the building.
We may ask you to help us (for example, by attending sessions) to ensure your child’s safety and enjoyment. While we strive to accommodate every need, we must ensure the section remains manageable and safe for all members.
Ethnicity and beliefs, gender and orientation
In line with the national Scouting movement, we welcome all members, adult volunteers, and children regardless of:
-
Race or ethnicity
-
Religion or belief
-
Gender or sexual orientation
There are multiple versions of the Scout Promise (for different faiths or for those of no religion) to suit the individual.
Digital inclusion
We use an online system to share information and process payments. We understand that not everyone is comfortable using digital platforms, and we are happy to help.
If you struggle with websites or our online system, we can provide guidance to help you get started.
For families who do not use email or the internet, we can arrange alternative ways to keep you informed. Please speak to your Section Leader to find the best method for you.
We also run a WhatsApp group for parents. This is a great place to support one another, keep on top of updates, and ask quick questions.
Feedback
Our Trustee Board and District leadership team are approachable and ready to discuss any concerns. If you feel uncomfortable speaking with a Section Leader, you can raise matters with our Group Lead Volunteer.
Please submit any questions, suggestions, or complaints through the ‘Contact Us’ page on our website.
