Explorers

and Young Leaders

East Somerset District offers an exciting programme for young people aged 14 to 18. Being an Explorer means you lead yourself. You design your own programme and work towards the top awards that Scouting offers.

There are exciting opportunities. You can be part of camps and expeditions at home and abroad. You can try adventurous activities such as mountaineering, parascending, and offshore sailing. Explorers Units offer fun and adventure for everyone.

Sometimes, you will need to focus on other things such as exams. Being an Explorer Scout fits around these times.

Explorers can join The Young Leaders’ Scheme. This helps develop skills in leadership, or guiding others, and a sense of responsibility. You can help run meetings for younger sections.

We master new skills and try new things. We achieve whatever we set our mind to. We stand up for what we believe in and make a difference in our community. We feel confident knowing our actions every day add up.

Units

Young leaders can take and active leadership role in our South Petherton Beaver Colony, Cub Pack and Scout Troops.

Explorers don't meet in South Petherton but they can join friends they have made through Scouting in the Lendiniae, Coker, Viking or Saxon Units across East Somerset.

Patrols

A Patrol is a smaller group of Explorers within their Unit, who look out for one another, and help each other grow.

Explorers usually stick together in their Patrols on trips away, or during certain activities. The Lendiniae Explorer Unit has a close link with South Petherton Scout Group.

DofE Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) programme is a real adventure from beginning to end.  It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from.  You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on a sofa watching life pass you by. Scouting is a major provider of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.  Getting involved in East Somerset couldn’t be easier. You just need to be part of the Explorer Scout or Scout Network Section and register to take part.
