Hall improvements
Our Scout Hall sits at the heart of our activities and is also used by other local organisations. However, the building no longer meets the needs of all users. Steps at the entrances, the absence of an accessible toilet, poor acoustics and limited flexible space create barriers for people with disabilities, mobility challenges and additional sensory needs.
We are doing a phased programme of improvements to make the building more accessible, inclusive and welcoming. These works will improve access, create additional activity space, provide quieter environments for young people and volunteers who need them and ensure community groups can continue to benefit from the facility for many years to come.
Planned work
To keep the project affordable and achievable, the improvements are divided into phases. Each phase delivers its own benefits, and work will only begin when enough funding has been raised for that specific stage.
Phase 1 - acoustic improvements
Acoustic ceiling tiles will be installed throughout the main hall to reduce echo and background noise, creating a calmer and more inclusive environment. This is particularly important for younger children and those with sensory sensitivities, helping more young people participate comfortably in activities.
Phase 2 - improved storage facilities
Installation of an insulated storage container conversion. This will provide secure, accessible storage for equipment currently stored within the hall, freeing up valuable indoor activity space and improving organisation. This opens up space for Phases 4 and 5.
Phase 3 - flexible outdoor space and improved entrance
A covered canopy will be constructed between the Scout Hut and the new storage area, providing a sheltered breakout space for small-group activities, outdoor learning and waiting parents. During this phase, accessible ramped access will also be created, improving independent access for wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties.
Phase 4 - accessible toilets
Internal alterations will reconfigure entrances and circulation routes, while the toilet facilities will be remodelled to create a fully accessible toilet. These works will allow all users to move around the building more easily and ensure that people with disabilities can access essential facilities with dignity and independence.
Phase 5 - modernised and accessible kitchen
The new kitchen will be designed to accommodate a wider range of users, including wheelchair users, while providing a safer and more practical space for youth cooking activities, community events and emergency use when the building serves as a temporary refuge.
